Slither into your next project with this Arbok crochet pattern! This intimidating Poison-type Pokémon is known for the fearsome hood patterns on its neck, each unique like a fingerprint and said to terrify foes. In the wild, Arbok can crush its opponents with the sheer power of its coils—but on your amigurumi-shelf, it’s more likely to just charm visitors with its striking design.

This amigurumi pattern is perfect for intermediate crocheters looking for a fun challenge, especially with shaping Arbok’s iconic hood and smooth, winding body. Whether you’re a fan of snake Pokémon or just want to add a splash of venomous style to your collection, this Arbok is sure to stand out among your amigurumi.

Supplies you'll need to crochet Arbok

General supplies:

With Amigurumi you guage doesn’t matter much. Using smaller hook and yarn will make you finished Arbok smaller, and bigger hook and yarn will make him bigger. Just make sure that your yarn and hook fits together and makes a tight fabric so the stuffing won’t show through!

In the recommended yarn below, your Arbok will be about 11 cm tall, or 4,5 inches tall.

I reccomend Hobbii Rainbow cotton 8/4. This yarn is a 100% cotton and very nice to work with! With this yarn, I use a 2,5 mm hook. If Rainbow cotton is sold out, I can also recommend Friends cotton from Hobbii as a direct substitute.

This pattern includes short rows, which will be explained in detail when they appear. Short rows are a technique where you crochet back and forth, turning your work in the middle of a round, instead of only working continuously in the round. If you’ve never used this technique before, you may want to scroll ahead and read the explanations in the pattern before you begin. You can also find helpful video tutorials on YouTube, though the exact method may vary slightly from what’s explained here.

Rnd 13: sc around (16)

Rnd 14: 7sc, 2inc, 7sc (18)

Rnd 15: sc around (18)

In the next rounds we will be making short-rows. This means we will be turning the piece around and working from the inside within the row, much like when crocheting in rows in general. The row is split up in 3 parts. We do this to make more stitches on one side of the piece to curl the tail.

After turning we ARE working in the ss we just made.

Rnd 16:
A: 12sc, ss, ch1, turn
B: 8sc, ss, ch1, turn
C: 14sc (18 stitches total in the round)

Rnd 17-18: repeat rnd 16.

Rnd 19: sc around (18)

Rnd 20: repeat rnd 16

Rnd 21-25: sc around (18)

Rnd 26:

We now start flaring out the hood of Arbok.

Rnd 47: (sc, inc sc) x 6 (24)

Rnd 48: (inc, 3sc) x 6 (30)

Rnd 49: (2sc, inc, 2sc) x 6 (36)

Stuff the body of the snake.

Now you’ll need to recenter the beginning of the round. We want the beginning of the round to be at the back of the hood, add or take away a few stitches to get to the center of the back of the hood. Place your marker here as this is now the new beginning of the round.

Rnd 50: 6sc, (inc, sc) x 3, 12sc, (inc, sc) x 3, 6sc (42)

Rnd 51: 6sc, (sc, inc, sc) x 3, 12sc, (sc, inc, sc) x 3, 6sc (48)

Rnd 52-59: sc around (48)

Rnd 60: 7sc, (sc, dec, sc) x 3, 12sc, (sc, dec, sc) x 3, 5sc (42)

Rnd 61: 7sc, (dec, sc) x 3, 12sc, (dec, sc) x 3, 5sc (36)

Finish stuffing the body of the snake-part. The hood will not have any stuffing. To make sure no stuffing ends up in the hood, fold the hood backwards and sew a few stitches inside to close off the body to trap the stuffing.

Rnd 62: (2sc, dec, 2sc) x 6 (30)

Rnd 63: (3sc, dec) x 6 (24)

“Eyes” for hood

Start in red. You will crochet around a chain. Chain 5 and start working in the 2nd chain from hook.

Rnd 1: ss, 2sc, 5hdc in the last chain, turn to work on the other side of chain, 2sc, ss, FO red.

attach the black yarn in the corner of the eye, preferably in the turning chain made in red from the beginning.

Rnd 2: 4sc, inc, sc, inc, 4sc, ch1, ss in the first sc made. FO

Embroider yellow lines in the eye. Make 2 eyes.

Add long pupil after assembly.

Assembly of your crochet Arbok

Attach the head to the hood. The head sits right over where the hood is closed.

Attach the mouth, eyes and eyebrow inside the hood. Flip the hood back and forth to check placement often. Also be sure to not accidentally sew all the way though to the back and make your stitches visible.

Add the white eyes on top of the head and embroider a long pupil. Also embroider nostrils and a thin mouth on the front of the head.
