Whether you’re growing your Pokémon amigurumi collection or just love the oddball Pokémon of Kanto, Bellsprout is a fun and lovable project that’s sure to stand out on your shelf.

Supplies you'll need to crochet Bellsprout

General supplies:

  • Crochet hook 2,5 mm
  • Sewing needle
  • Stuffing
  • Stitch marker
  • (optional) wire for the body

With Amigurumi you guage doesn’t matter much. Using smaller hook and yarn will make you finished Bellsprout smaller, and bigger hook and yarn will make it bigger. Just make sure that your yarn and hook fits together and makes a tight fabric so the stuffing won’t show through!

For a smaller version, about 8 cm tall, or 3 inches, you will need the following yarn.

I use a 8/4 cotton with a 2,5 mm hook. For Bellsprout you’ll need the following colors

  • Yellow
  • Brown
  • Green
  • Pink
  • Black
  • A bit of black and white for eyes if you’re not using safety eyes

Bellsprout crochet pattern

Vine

Work in brown.

We are making the vines from the bottom-up. Be aware that this piece is multiple pieces connected by crocheting around 2 pieces. This will give 3 stages of the vine, for simplicity I have named these: ‘Feet’, ‘Legs’ and finally the ‘Body’ of the vine piece. We start by making 2 ‘Feet’ and connect them to form a ‘Leg’. Then we repeat that to make a second ‘Leg’. These will be connected to finally make the final ‘Body’

‘Feet’

Rnd 1: 5sc in mr (5)

Rnd 2-4: sc around (5)

Ss and FO 1 piece. Make another ‘foot’ but do not FO. Instead continue with the instructions below to make a ‘Leg’. We will connect the 2 ‘Foot’-pieces in rnd 5.

Rnd 5: start working in the piece with the yarn attached and make 5sc around. Next continue making 5sc in the other piece (10) The pieces are now connected, continue working around both pieces like normal.

Rnd 6: 3sc, 2dec, 3sc (8)

Rnd 7-8: sc around

Ss, FO.

Now 1 ‘Leg’ is done. Make another identical piece starting from rnd 1. Do not FO the 2nd piece, but continue from rnd 9 below to finish the stem/’Body’ of the vine.

Rnd 9: make 8sc in the ‘Leg’-piece with yarn connected, 8sc around the 2nd piece (16)

Rnd 10: (dec, 6sc) x 2 (14)

Rnd 11: (5sc, dec) x 2 (12)

Rnd 12: sc around (12)

Rnd 13: (dec, 4sc) x 2 (10)

Rnd 14-16: sc around (10)

Rnd 17: (dec, 3sc) x 2 (8)

Rnd 18: sc around (8)

Ss, FO with tail for sewing.

Head

Start work in black color. You will also need pink and yellow.

The head is made from the mouth and toward the back of the head.

Rnd 1: 6sc in mr (6)

Rnd 2: inc x 6 (12)

Rnd 3: (sc, inc) x 6 (18)

Change color to pink

Rnd 4: working in FLO, sc around (18)

Rnd 5: work in both loops again, sc around (18)

Change color to yellow.

Next we make the lip fold over. In the next round, every stitch will be worked through the normal pink st and the black back loop leftover from round 4. To work a stitch, insert hook into pink st, continue and also insert the hook in the black back loop, then yarn over and finish your stitch.

Rnd 6: working through regular stitch and back loop from rnd 4, sc around (18)

Rnd 7: (dec, 4sc) x 3 (15)

Rnd 8: sc around (15)

Rnd 9: (2sc, inc, 2sc) x 3 (18)

Rnd 10: (5sc, inc) x 3 (21)

Rnd 11: (3sc, inc, 3sc) x 3 (24)

Rnd 12: (7sc, inc) x 3 (27)

Rnd 13-16: sc around (27)

Rnd 17: (7sc, dec) x 3 (24)

Rnd 18: (sc, dec, sc) x 6 (18)

Rnd 19: (sc, dec) x 6 (12)

Stuff

Rnd 20: dec x 6 (6)

FO.

Leaves

Work in green color

We will work around a chain to start the leaf.. Start by chaining 8. The first st is made in the 2nd ch from the hook.

Rnd 1: sc, 5hdc, 3sc in last ch, turn to work on other side of chain, 5hdc, inc (16)

Rnd 2: sc, hdc-inc, 5dc, in the next st (2dc, 2ch-picot, 2dc), 6dc, hdc-inc, sc (21)

ss, FO with tail for sewing.

Make 2 leaves.

Assembly of your crochet Bellsprout

If needed, add wiring to the vine before continuing. Otherwise stuff as needed.

Add the vine to the bottom of the head, be sure the ‘legs’ are pointed to the sides for best standing-ability.

Add a leaf at either side.

Embroider eyes on the head. I added 2-3 vertical black lines and a single white line on the side for best effect.

And now your Belsprout is finished!
