Supplies you'll need to crochet Butterfree
General supplies:
- Crochet hook 2,5 mm for small version and 6 mm for large version, I always use clover amour hooks for my projects!
- Sewing needle
- Stuffing
- Stitch marker
With Amigurumi you guage doesn’t matter much. Using smaller hook and yarn will make you finished Butterfree smaller, and bigger hook and yarn will make it bigger. Just make sure that your yarn and hook fits together and makes a tight fabric so the stuffing won’t show through!
For a smaller version, about 10 cm tall, or 4 inches, you will need the following yarn.
I reccomend Hobbii Rainbow cotton 8/4. This yarn is a 100% cotton and very nice to work with! With this yarn, I use a 2,5 mm hook (or a B-1 or C-2 should work too!). If Rainbow cotton is sold out, I can also recommend Friends cotton from Hobbii as a direct substitute.

For the wings of butterfree, we are making a big wing and a small wing for each side. All wings will be double sided to give the best result.
Big wing
In white
The wing is made in rows. After every row be sure to ch1, turn.
Start by chaining 7. The work start in 2nd ch from the hook.
Row 1: 5sc, inc (7)
Row 2: inc, 5sc, inc (9)
Row 3: 8sc, inc (10)
Row 4: inc, 9sc (11)
Row 5: 10sc, inc (12)

Row 9: 13sc, inc (15)
Row 10-11: 15sc (15)
Row 12: sc2tog, 11sc, sc2tog (13)
Row 13: sc2tog, 9sc, sc2tog (11)
Row 14: sc2tog, 7sc, ss. Don’t ch1 and turn.
Make 4 of these pieces.
Embroider the pattern onto each wing (videodemonstration can be found here) – be sure to make them in mirrored pairs so you have a mirrored pair for the back and for the front. Try your best to make the lines line up on the outer edge of the front and back of the wings for the cleanest look. Connect white yarn through both layers at the shortest end of the piece. sc around the outer part of the wing with white to connect the two pieces, then change to black and sc around again. On the black round, make deep sc where there is an embroidered stripe to not have a gap. To make a deep sc simply insert your hook where the black embroidery ends and make the sc like normal.
Small wing
In white
The wing is made in rows. After every row be sure to ch1, turn.

Row 3: 7sc, inc (9)
Row 4: inc, 8sc (10)
Row 5-6: 10sc (10)
Row 7: sc2tog, 6sc, sc2tog (8)
Row 8: sc2tog, 4sc, ss. Don’t ch1 and turn.
Make 4 pieces.
Repeat the embroidery process and attach each set of wings in the same way as described above for the big wing.
The picture below is the embroidery on the small wings.

Assembly of your crochet Butterfree
Start by assembling the wings if you haven’t yet. See instructions under the patterns for the wings.
Then work on the body. The eyes go over rnds 3-6 with 2-3 stitches apart. The antenna sit on rnd 2 on either side of the head. The nose sit on rounds 6-8 in the center between the eyes.
The base hands are added at rnd 13 with the fingers going agains the belly of Butterfree. The legs are attached at the bottom. They can be attached flat in a “sitting” position or straight down like Buttefree is flying. They are attached on the 2nd to last rnd of the body.
The wings are attached at the back and the wings should be touching each other on the back (no purple should show through between the wings). Add the big wings first starting at the neck and then add the small wings starting right below the big wings – still make sure no purple shows through between the wings.
