Supplies you'll need to crochet Dragonite
General supplies:
- Crochet hook 2,5 mm, I always use clover amour hooks for my projects!
- Sewing needle
- Stuffing
- Stitch marker
With Amigurumi you guage doesn’t matter much. Using smaller hook and yarn will make you finished Dragonite smaller, and bigger hook and yarn will make it bigger. Just make sure that your yarn and hook fits together and makes a tight fabric so the stuffing won’t show through!
In the yarn below the Dragonite will be about 13 cm tall.
I reccomend Hobbii Rainbow cotton 8/4. This yarn is a 100% cotton and very nice to work with! With this yarn, I use a 2,5 mm hook (or a B-1 or C-2 should work too!). If Rainbow cotton is sold out, I can also recommend Friends cotton from Hobbii as a direct substitute.

- Beige

Wings
Make 2 green, and 2 in body color.
Always turn by ch 1 and turn between rows.
Start by chaining 5. The first stitch is in 2nd chain from the hook.

Row 12: dec, 2sc, inc (5)
Row 13: inc, 2sc, dec (5)
Row 14: dec, 2sc, inc (5)
ch 1, FO.
Make 2 green, and 2 in body color to have a total of 4 wing pieces.
Put one of each color together and sc along top of wing through both layers with orange yarn. Sew the bottom together on the inside to hide the seam to make sure you have a clean edge where the colors meek. Do the same with second pair to create the other wing. Be sure to make a left and a right wing by lying the wings flat and check that they form a left and a right when the green side is facing toward you.
Claws
Work in white.
Rnd 1: 4sc in mr (4)
Rnd 2: 3sc, ss
Make 3 for each foot (6 total).
Feet
Work in orange
The feet are worked around a chain. (video tutorial here).
Start by chaining 6. The first st is in the 2nd ch from the hook.
Rnd 1: 4sc, 3sc in last, 3sc, inc (12)
Rnd 2: (5sc, inc) x 2 (14)
Rnd 3-7: sc around (14)
Rnd 8: (dec, 5sc) x 2 (12)
Rnd 9-10: sc around (12)
Stuff.
Rnd 11: dec x 6 (6)
Make 2.
Arms
Work in orange
Rnd 1: 6sc in mr (6)
We are making the claws in the next rnd. The claws are made as follows.
claw: At the end of the previous stitch, change to white by working the final yarn over of the single crochet with white instead of orange – this leaves a white loop on your hook. Chain 2 with white, then insert your hook into the second chain from the hook and pull up a loop (2 white loops now on your hook). Drop the white yarn, yarn over with orange, and pull through both loops to complete the stitch. Continue the pattern with orange as your working yarn.
You will essentially make an increase with a claw st in between the 2 sc of the inc.
Rnd 2: 2inc, (in 1st sc, claw, sc) x 3, inc (12)
Rnd 3-12: sc around (12)
Rnd 13: (dec, 4sc) x 2 (10)
Thighs
Work in orange
Rnd 1: 6sc in mr (6)
Rnd 2: inc x 6 (12)
Rnd 3: (sc, inc) x 6 (18)
Rnd 4: (sc, inc, sc) x 6 (24)
Rnd 5: (3sc, inc) x 6 (30)
Rnd 6: sc around (30)
Rnd 7: 15sc, ss, FO
Make 2.
Before making the belly piece, sew the tail and muzzle to the body. This enables you to try the belly patch on and potentially adjust the length by adding or taking away a few of the last rows to make sure the belly fits your Dragonites body perfectly. The tail sits on the back of the body (use marker to identify the front) and starts at rnd 27 and goes down to rnd 39 of the body piece. Remember to stuff the tail before sewing shut.
The muzzle sits at the front of the body, over the marker. When making the muzzle, we crocheted a half round at the end, that half round is the bottom of the muzzle. It sits on rnds 10-17. Be sure to remove the marker before sewing in place if it’s a stitchmarker that shouldn’t stay inside Dragonite forever 🙂
Test the belly patch by placing it right below the muzzle and lying it along the body toward the tip of the tail.
Belly patch
Work in beige
The piece is worked in rows. Between rows be sure to ch1 and turn the work.
start by ch 6, start 2nd
Row 1-3: 5sc (5)
Row 4: 2sc, inc, 2sc (6)
Row 5: 6sc (6)
Row 6: 2sc, inc, 3sc (7)
Row 7: 7sc (7)
Row 8: 3sc, inc, 3sc (8)
Row 9-10: 8sc (8)
Row 11: 3sc, inc, 4sc (9)
Row 12: 4sc, inc, 4sc (10)
Row 13: 4sc, inc, 5sc (11)
Row 14: 5sc, inc, 5sc (12)
Row 15-26: 12sc (12)
Row 27: x, dec, 6sc, dec, sc (10)
Row 28: 4sc, dec, 4sc (9)
Row 29: 9sc (9)
Row 30: 3sc, dec, 4sc (8)
Row 31-34: 8sc (8)
Row 35: 3sc, dec, 3sc (7)
Row 36-37: 7sc (7)
Now is a good time to check that the belly patch is lining up nicely with the tail. Do this continuously and add or take away sc rows to make the length fit. Be aware that we will finish the piece by sc around it, this will add a bit of width to the piece.
Row 38: 2sc, dec, 3sc (6)
Row 39: 6sc (6)
Row 40: 2sc, dec, 2sc (5)
Row 41: 5sc (5)
Row 42: sc, dec, 2sc (4)
Row 43: 4sc (4)
Row 44: sc, dec, sc (3)
Row 45: 3sc (3)
Row 46: dec, sc (2)
Row 47-48: 2sc (2)
Row 49: dec (1)
Row 50: 1sc (1)
sc around the entire piece to create a nice edge. FO with a long tail for sewing.
Eyes
Start the work in black
Start by chaining 3. You’ll begin working into the second chain from the hook. (CC = color change)
Row 1: 2 sc, CC to white in the last stitch. Chain 1, turn.
Row 2: 2 sc in white. Slip stitch into the turning chain from the beginning of row 1 and CCback to black. Then make 2 slip stitches into the other side of the foundation chain to get a nice edge.
Weave in all ends securely. Make sure to create both a left and right piece when weaving in the ends.
Gently stretch the piece to shape it before sewing it on later. and sew it in place just above the nose/muzzle.
Horns (slightly silly looking)
Work in beige.
Make slipknot with a long tail.
Make 15 sc around the tail of the slipknot. Pull the tail to make the piece twist. Pull until desired “twistiness” and tie a knot to secure it. Make 2
Horns (less silly but thicker)
If you’re working in a thicker weight yarn, the horns could potentially be made in a thinner yarn to stay thin.
Rnd 1: 4sc in mr (4)
Rnd 2: sc around (4)
repeat rnd 2 until desired length
optional: add wire to stabilize and shape the horns
Assembly of your crochet Dragonite
You will already have assembled the body, tail and muzzle at this point.
First add the thighs as the belly patch will partially cover them. The thighs have a partial rnd as the last rnd, these stitches should point downward and be the bottom of the thigh. The thighs start at rnd 29 of the body and down to around rnd 38. They should not be stretched out when sewn onto the piece. Stuff them before sewing shut.
Now place the belly patch along the body and sew it down first. It goes from the bottom of the muzzle and all the way to the tip of the tail. It should partially cover the bottom of the thighs.
Assemble the feet by adding 3 claws on top of the starting chain. Then add the feet to Dragonite. Position the feet on the thigh-pieces so the heel of each foot will touch the ground when Dragonite sits on a flat surface. The top of the feet should point slightly outwards.
Attach the arms at rnd 21-26 on either side about 4-5 stitches from the side of the belly patch. Position the arms inwards over the belly patch and make sure the claws point upwards or outwards depending on your preference.
Attach the wings at the back starting at rnd 20. Pin them in place first and check placement from the front. The wings don’t need to touch on the back – there are 2 sc between my wings where they are closest.
Lastly sew on the eyes right above the muzzle and the horns at the top of the head around rnd 5. If preferred, embroider nostrils or a cute smile on Dragonite.
